Illyria (Albanian-American Newspaper)

Illyria is a bilingual Albanian- and English-language newspaper founded in June 1991 in the Bronx, New York. The Library of Congress catalogs it as "Illyria: Albanian-American Newspaper (Bronx, NY) 1991–Current," published semiweekly except holidays, and carries it among the diaspora newspapers of the Albanian-American community.

The paper was founded by Harry Bajraktari, with Vehbi Bajrami as publisher. From its early years, Illyria framed its mission around democracy in Albania, independence for Kosova, and the situation of Albanians across the Balkans. It positions itself as continuing the legacy of Fan Noli and Faik Konica, and describes its role as "the voice and the diary of the new Albanian-Americans."

Formal correspondence, including a Letter to the Editor from the Orthodox Church in America, has been addressed to "ILLYRIA, The Albanian-American Newspaper, Inc." at 2321 Hughes Avenue, Bronx, NY 10458. The paper later also operated from a Manhattan office at 481 8th Avenue in Midtown, reachable at (212) 868-2224.

Though rooted in New York, Illyria reports a nationwide U.S. readership, circulating among Albanian-Americans from Florida to Alaska and into the offices of members of Congress, diplomats in Washington, and university departments. Bound volumes are held in the Library of Congress Newspaper and Current Periodical Reading Room, marking decades of continuous publication.
