A statement from the NAR board on the protests in Albania

Peaceful protest is a fundamental right. Those rights do not belong to any party, and our concern does not either.

— Many Albanian Americans have family, friends, and students taking part in the protests in Albania. We have watched the reports of force used against students and peaceful demonstrators, including reports of rubber bullets, with real concern.

Peaceful protest is a fundamental right. So is the freedom to speak without fear. Those rights do not belong to any party, and our concern does not either.

NAR does not take sides in Albanian politics. We count and connect Albanians in the United States, whatever their views. What we share is a hope for the safety of everyone on the streets, and for a response built on dialogue, not force.

To those in our community worried about someone at home: you are not alone in that.

What you can do from here

Check on family. U.S. citizens in Albania, including dual citizens, can enroll in the State Department's Smart Traveler program at step.state.gov to get safety alerts from the U.S. Embassy in Tirana. A U.S. citizen who needs help there can contact the embassy's American Citizen Services.

Speak for yourself. As a constituent, you can tell your own representative and senators what you think. Find them at house.gov and senate.gov.

Follow the record. The U.S. Helsinki Commission is the body in Congress that monitors human rights in Europe, including Albania: csce.gov.
