Each September 5, the Albanian-American Association of Cleveland gathers at the Mother Teresa statue in the Albanian Cultural Garden, part of Cleveland's Cultural Gardens federation in Rockefeller Park. The bronze statue by Albanian sculptor Kreshnik Xhiku — installed in 2012 — is the centerpiece of the garden honoring the Skopje-born Albanian Catholic nun canonized by Pope Francis in 2016. The community lays flowers, holds a brief commemoration in Albanian and English, and reads from her writings. Greater Cleveland is home to roughly 20,000 Albanians.
